The winter Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) show is upon us once again in sunny Southern California. I went to an amazing seminar by The Crafty Chica, aka, Kathy Cano-Murillo on blogging and was reminded that we are severely lacking in our regularity of blog posting! With the increased use of facebook and twitter, our blog has suffered. So to kick off a fresh start to blogging regularly we are planning to post updates once a week.

We have finally recovered from our adventures at the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) convention and want to share some fun pictures with you. After 3 full days, we almost covered the whole show...it is HUGE! Here are some of our highlights...

The Star Wars characters were at the Creative Imaginations booth posing for photos to promote the CI new line of Star Wars papers, stickers and more! We got to do a cute make n take with this photo and put it on a paper clip/magnet.

I was so excited to get a picture with Jennifer McGuire at the Hero Arts booth. She is so sweet and does amazing scrapbook layouts, cards and more! You can see her work and get fun ideas on her blog.

Here is Judy hard at work doing a Valentine's card make-n-take project, and the finished card below.

A quick trip across the walkway to the Starbucks for a pick me up. About half way through the day, a vente Carmel Macchiato was in order!

Meeting Tim Holtz was one of the highlights of the show! He is so talented and creative and has amazing products! You can visit his blog to see some of his work.

Artful Collage Contest Winner....

Rockin' and Rollin' in Southern California

WOW, we had a nice little shake up today with a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, centered just about 10 miles from us! It has been awhile since we have had a shake like that. My two youngest kids were really scared but the older one thought it was kind of neat. Thankfully, nothing was broken and nobody was hurt around our area. Did anyone else feel the quake? The news said that it was felt as far east as Las Vegas and clear down to San Diego. Hope you weren't in the middle of cutting an intricate design with an exacto knife. :)

August Customer Highlight:

Suzanne McPhee

This special lady is such a blessing to us. Her happy voice always brightens the day and stories about her 'babies' (shown in the photo to the left) are sure to make you laugh! Besides being the only person to breed armadillos in captivity, Sue is an amazing card crafter and shares with us how to create the beautiful card shown below. The finished card looks like silk fabric. Read on to see how you can make one of your own!

Supplies:
10 Prima Hydrangeas (5 large, 5 small)
2 1/2 inch cardstock circle (base of hydrangea)
8 1/2" x 5 1/5" cardstock (folded in half)
Foil
Paper Towel
Black Gesso
Green Interference Paint
Miscellaneous background stamp
1. Cut foil and paper towel to approximately 4" x 5.25".
2. Lay foil on top of folded card front and place paper towel piece on top of foil. Paint with gesso and let dry.

3. Paint paper towel with green interference paint and let dry.
4. Stamp desired pattern onto paper towel.
5. Cut hydrangeas into fourths. Layer 9 hydrangea petals in a circle around the edge of the 2 1/2 inch cardstock piece.
6. Layer another 9 petals on top of the first row, alternating so that the petals on the bottom show.
7. Repeat layering with small petals so that you end up with 4 layers of petals.
8. Put small hydrangea in the center and attach a crystal or brad. Add extra embellishments as desired.

National Scrapbooking Day Challenges:

Our first challenge comes from our design team. Here's what Nikki wants you to do: In honor of National Scrapbooking day, try something completely out of the ordinary for you. Pick something you normally would not do: ink, circles, stamping, several different fonts, paint...whatever you've been wanting to try but are too afraid, just do it! Post your layout in the Cut Above Scrappin' Yahoo Gallery with *NSD 1* in the title.
Are you ready for another challenge? Ok, this one is something everyone can do. Create a card using cardstock and at least two embellishments (Prima flowers, ribbon, brads, stickers/tags...you choose!). Post it in the Cut Above Scrappin' Yahoo Gallery with *NSD 2* in the title. Have fun!
Here's another challenge from Nikki...Scraplift yourself! Take a past layout that you have done that you just love. Then decide on which elements of that LO to keep. Maybe the title positioning, the layering, the flowers, or maybe all of it! Maybe you just want to change the colors or flip the layout or make it 8.5x11 instead of 12x12. Then pick a new photo or photos and create a new layout similar to your old one. Post your old layout and then your new one so we can see the similarities. Remember to put *NSD 3* in your title so we can enter you into the drawing.
Jen has an idea for you as well. In honor of 5/05 create a card, altered item or layout using 5 items (like 5 brads, 5 circles, 5 Prima flowers). Upload your project in the Cut Above Scrappin' Yahoo gallery with *NSD 4* in the title.
And our final challenge for tonight is from Shana. Scrap some photos about National Scrapbooking Day. For example, if you went to a crop or just hung out in your pj's all day. Create a layout about how you celebrated the day! Be sure to upload it into the user gallery and put *NSD 5* in the title.

April Prima Contest

We want you to show us your projects using the new Prima Isabelle's Secret Flowers! Select your favorite color and style and let the creative juices flow! Submit your favorite, layout, card and altered projects to contest@cutabovescrappin.com by April 28th at midnight PDT to enter. Submissions will be uploaded to the Cut Above Scrappin' gallery and then you can vote for your favorites! Voting will begin April 30th and end May 5th. Entries with the most votes in each category wins!

Only one submission per category please. Categories are: layout, card, and altered item.
Layouts may be either 1 page or two, any size.

Make an Altered Bottle

This really is a pretty and easy project and the end result is always so beautiful! I hope this inspires you to create an altered bottle!

Supplies Needed:

1 empty & cleaned bottle (I often use the Starbucks Frappuccino bottle)

Scrap pattern papers & cardstock (make sure they fit around the bottle)

Permanent adhesive & glue dots

Acrylic paint that matching papers selected

Sponge brush

Sandpaper

Scissors & cutter maybe needed

Ribbons & other embellishments

Step #1: Lightly sand the top of the bottle to prep for painting.

Step #2: Paint the cap with acrylic paint and set aside to dry. You may need to do multiple coats of paint.

Step #3: Decide placement of the papers. I layer them together off the bottle and then attach to the bottle with permanent adhesive or glue dots.

Step #4: Embellish! I love embellishing with ribbon, flowers, brads, mini tags, etc.

Step #5: Fill it up! I usually fill my jars up with candy but recently made one as a CHA Fund bottle where my husband and I put our spare change that will go towards my trip to Chicago in the summer.

Cut Above Scrappin' is looking for 3 team members for our first ever design team! As a design team member your role will be to help showcase products in our store. Your monthly submissions may be used for our newsletter, featured items, design ideas or classes and will be posted in our gallery. We are looking for creative scrapbook and paper artists. Artists should not be afraid to be creative and try new techniques .

If chosen as a new Cut Above Scrappin' (CAS) design team member you will be responsible for:

For each project submitted, you must include a materials list and a sketch for the project. (Each DT member must submit 2 layouts, and 1 other altered art project every month.)
Contributing ideas, challenges, tips or articles for use in our monthly newsletter.
Creating monthly kits to establish a monthly kit club for Cut Above Scrappin'.
Promoting Cut Above Scrappin' and including our DT membership and link information in your signature line of all the online communities and galleries you are active in.
Providing a picture and short bio for our DT member page on our website.
Crediting Cut Above Scrappin' as the supply sponsor for projects submitted for contests and publication.
Commiting to a six-month design agreement with CAS.
